Legacy Arms - Irish Hand and Half Sword

  • 59999

The Irish Ring-Pommel family of swords are believed to date anywhere from the 14th to 16th Century, though the earliest contemporary depiction of this particular style is "War Men of Ireland" by Albrecht Dürer, which depicts Gallowglass mercenaries departing from England.

The blades for these swords were typically imported and originally it was believed that they came predominantly from Germany, though evidence suggests that they also came from France and Spain. However, the combination of spatulate quillons on the cross guard and the ring pommel wrapped around the tang, which protrudes through the grip, are a distinctly Irish feature.

This particular version from Legacy Arms is reminiscent of a larger hand-and-a-half artefact, which is on display at The National Museum of Ireland - Archaeology. The relatively light pommel leaves the distribution of weight further up the blade, allowing for relatively heavy cutting power despite a thinner blade than normal.
