Dragon King - Modern Tanto

  • 44999

The tanto dates back as early as the Heian period (794-1185), and continues to be produced up to the modern era. It was traditionally carried by samurai, though it was also occasionally carried by women in their obi for self-defence. It could also be worn with a wakizashi, tachi, or katana as part of a daishōwhich was the pair of swords worn by samurai, though later it would be supplanted by the wakizashi as the paired sword of choice. It served as a back up weapon in the event that the main weapon or sword was lost.

Typically, the tanto had a blade length of one shaku (12 inches) or less, though this could vary depending on the region or the period. The tanto could also be single-edged or double-sided, with a variety of forging techniques employed that could differ from a katana or tachi

This take by Dragon King on the tanto seeks to update the design for modern materials. Featuring a traditional differentially heat treated blade made of 1566 high carbon steel, the tsuka is a G-10 laminate, and features inset shi shi (lion dogs) to provide a better gripping surface.
