Dragon King - Modern Katana

  • 69999

The katana ( the Japanese term for a sword or one-sided blade depending on the resource you are using) as we picture it is generally a moderately long, slightly curved, single-edged blade, which differentiates it from the tsurugi, which was the family of double-edged blades. It is believed that katanas began to be produced in the early Muromachi period (1336-1573), taking over from from the tachi as the main sidearm of the samurai

The biggest distinguishing features of the katana, particularly in comparison to the tachi, is that it has a minimum blade length of two shaku (approximately 24"), the placement of the signature on the tang, and that it was worn blade up instead of blade down, like the tachi

Eventually the katana became a status symbol, worn predominantly by police and military members, before eventually becoming artistic symbols of culture and skill in blade smithing.

This particular katana, made by Dragon King, features a 27" blade made of 1566 steel, giving it hard enough for edge retention and quite strong, which has been differentially hardened to create a beautiful hamon line. Updated for modern materials, the grip is made from G-10 laminate and is dual pinned for better retention to the tang. A shi shi (lion dog) embedded on each side of the tsuka (the grip), provide additional texture to prevent the blade slipping in your hands.
