Cold Steel - Scimitar

  • 54999

The scimitar is a bit of a "catch-all" term that was introduced to the English language as a possible corruption of the Persian word "Shamshir". Originally, Persian blades were double-edged and straight. Around the 9th Century, the iconic style of the curved, single-edged blade first came into being in the Khorosan region of Central Asia.

The Shamshir proper developed over time due to the influence of the Seljuk Khanate from the 12th Century and the Mongol Invasion of the 13th Century, before finally becoming distinct from other saber types in the 16th century, though it has relatives in the Turkish Kilij, the Mughal Talwar, and the Arabian Saif.

These blades are typically long and very thin, with a strong curve to them which makes them excellent cutting swords, though they are less capable of thrusting than other, straighter designs, and they typically feature an offset pommel, relatively simple quillons, and intricate decoration.

This particular model from Cold Steel clearly takes its inspiration from the Shamshir, and is made from 1065 high carbon steel. It also features a brass ring in the handle to attach a cord, lanyard, or sash for blade retention or decoration, as well as a leather sheath with decorative etching to match the sword.
