Before the invention of repeating firearms, it was common for hunters, especially the gentry, to carry a sword as a method of finishing off wounded game without having to waste further shot. It also served the dual purpose of allowing them to defend themselves if the wounded animal attacked. 

This particular version by Cold Steel is based on the Hangers of the 16th and 17th centuries. However, unlike the military service weapons it is based on, this hunting sword features the additional embellishments you might expect for a refined member of the gentry.
