Cold Steel - Hungarian Saber
The Hungarian Saber, in this case more specifically the Hungarian-Polish Szbala, was a light cavalry saber from the 16th and 17th century that became popular across Europe following the 30 Years War, and was so effective that it also became adopted by the infantry. It was also one of the primary inspirations for John Gaspard Le Marchant when he designed the British Pattern 1796 Light Cavalry Saber, though he did not include the hatchet point that gives it so much cutting power.
First used by the Transylvanian-Hungarian King of Poland, Stefan Batory, this sword became particularly popular among the nobility, the Szlachta, and served as both a weapon and an important symbol and was considered one of the most important pieces of a man's attire at the time. So many of these sabers were ordered by the King that they were also colloquially referred to as batorówka, after the name Batory.
This particular Cold Steel take on this iconic Eastern European saber is an excellent and faithful reproduction of this potent weapon, and makes for a fantastic cutter at only 5 ounces, and an incredible addition to any sword collection!
