Closed Bellows-Face Burgonet

  • 34999

The burgonet helmet was the successor of the earlier sallet style-helmets, and came into existence early in the 16th Century and quickly became popular across Europe, in particular with the Border Reivers or the English-Scottish border, Swiss mercenary infantry, and the Polish Winged Hussars. Often open-faced for breathability, visibility, and cost, none-the-less there are many examples of close-faced versions, such as this one, which is based on a 17th Century German Bellows-visored burgonet. The crest at the top of the helmet served to provide additional protection from overhead blows by actively deflecting them down the sides of the helmet, while also reinforcing the structure.

The burgonet helmet lasted well into the modern period, falling our of favour briefly in the late 18th and 19th Centuries, before serving as a design example used for the development of modern combat helmets.

This particular version of the burgonet features full face protection that locks into place with a pin on the side of the helmet, and is manufactured from 16 gauge steel.
