Legacy Arms - Templar Knight Sword

  • 59999

This blade typifies the Oakeshott Type XIIA blades that began to appear in the mid-13th Century toward the end of the period typically known as the "Crusades". As armour technology had begun to improve, some crusading knights had opted to replace their single-handed arming swords with larger, two handed blades, which were the precursor to the longswords and great swords of the later Medieval period.

These blades featured a long handle, cruciform cross guard, a fuller that ran approximately 2/3 to 3/4 of the length of the blade, and were tapered toward the point. It is believed that the design of these swords was intended to also serve as a counter to improved chainmail construction, allowing knights with these blades to hold an advantage on the battlefield against an equally armoured opponent.

This particular sword from Legacy Arms features the heraldry of the Knights Templar. Founded following the First Crusade, the Knights Templar were one of the most prominent crusading Orders, renowned for their military capability, as well as their economic and charitable actions in Europe. The Order was officially disbanded by Pope Clement V, under pressure by King Phillip IV of France after significant persecution due to the King owing an enormous amount of money to the Order and not wishing to pay it back.
